Music Therapy for Writing Creatively

It's Not Just What You Listen To. It's How You Listen
We have to write a lot of content to stay relative to our readers. I administrate a website, ghostwrite for colleagues, and contribute articles for online content. Deadlines can quickly overwhelm me if I don't stay on top of my projects. Staying focused daily is a constant struggle and I've had to incorporate stress reducing methods into my daily life. Music is how I stay focused and keep my stress to a minimum.

Stress is not always a bad thing. We need stress to remind us that things are pending. We also need stress to keep us from getting lazy. But stress without a relief valve can wear you down mentally. It can become counterproductive to your work and even affect your health in the long term. The problem with writers is that although our minds are constantly exercised, our bodies may not be getting the workout it needs. I resolve this by leaving my vehicle in the driveway and walking to the coffee shop to work.

This is about a 30 minute walk and I listen to music on the way. The type of music I listen to while walking to work is important. I need soothing comfort music to start my day and get into the proper frame of mind. Writing ideas come to me during this time as my mind begins to open up and endorphins are released.

I sit with a cup of espresso infused dark roast and put my ideas in order. On any given morning, I can have as many as ten or more article ideas just from the walk. Once I’m ready to start typing, I need higher levels of stress. My play list is set to a higher tempo which ensures I remain focused and the words fly onto the page consistently. Sometimes I produce 6 to 10 articles a day, followed by as many pages of website updates. This can easily result in 8 to 12 hours of straight research and writing depending upon the content I'm working on.

Ghostwriting for fellow writers is also a writing challenge but adds a new perspective. It's different than the more clinical process of article writing. I need a slightly lower level of stress for creativity. The music that is conducive to what I need depends on the content I'm writing. Currently, my ghostwriting project is more foreboding and dark and the music has to be the same to keep the mood.

Although my day begins at around 4 a.m., it only seems like a blink of an eye before someone is tapping me on the shoulder letting me know its closing time. I am always surprised at how much work I have put in at the end of each day. Fellow writers meet up at the same coffee shop and are always impressed by my ability to consistently remain focused for extended periods of time. My secret is a carefully arranged series of various genres of music. I hope this helps you with your writing endeavors and future projects!
